Maple Syrup Cut-Out Cookies

Christmas has always been such a special holiday for me. Always filled with incredible scents, delicious meals, happy memories and adorable decorations. Of course, cookies are never left out of the equation – your quality of life is infinitely improved when you have some. These Maple Syrup Cut-Out Cookies are the perfect candidate for your holiday or weekend baking. Super soft and chewy in the center, crispy on the edges and filled with pure maple syrup.

Make Ahead Instructions:

For cookie recipes I always look for a dough that can be made ahead of time or that can be frozen. I love to make a double batch so I don’t run out of something sweet when the craving hits. It may seem difficult at first to organise everything, but it’s life changer. Instead of freezing the whole dough, I divide it into balls. Then I arrange them on a baking sheet in the freezer for 10 minutes (so they won’t stick together). Next, I take them out and place them in a sealed bag. When I want to bake some maple syrup cookies, I just throw some dough balls in the oven and cook them for 1-2 minutes longer. There’s no need to thaw.

These maple syrup cut-out cookies are so easy to make, plus, they taste as well as they look. They have a strong maple flavour, but are moderately sweet. The salt intensifies the sweetness of the cookies and adds incredible depth of flavour. The icing on top is smooth and adds a wonderful texture. The icing will set, so you can stack them and bring them with you everywhere or just keep them for yourself.

Chilling the dough is critical because it contains additional liquid (maple syrup). If you skip this step, the cookies will spread into a greasy mess.

There’s nothing like waking up to that mouth-watering smell of freshly baked maple syrup cookies. I always eat a couple while they’re piping hot (because I have no patience) with a big cup of hot chocolate or a glass of milk. So start baking, it will for sure help to make some amazing memories!

Total Time 2 hrs 17 mins

Ingredients

For the cookie dough

  • 350 g flour all-purpose
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 120 g unsalted butter room temperature
  • 200 g brown sugar
  • 1 egg room temperature
  • 80 ml pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the icing

  • 115 g unsalted butter
  • 80 ml maple syrup
  • 120 g powdered sugar
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl add the dry ingredients – flour, baking soda and salt. Whisk to combine and set aside.
  • Whisk butter and brown sugar until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. Scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed. Add the egg and beat until combined, about 30 seconds. Add maple syrup, vanilla extract and mix until combined, about 30 seconds.
  • Add the dry ingredients in 2 batches over the wet ingredients and mix until combined. The dough will be soft and creamy.
  • Cover and chill for at least 2 hours, up to 3-4 days. Let it thaw 30 minutes before rolling, because the dough will be hard to work with.
  • Preheat oven to 180°C and line 2 or 3 large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Divide dough in half, roll, cut in the desired shape or form into a ball and bake for 12-14 minutes or until lightly browned on the sides. Remove from the oven, let them cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • To make the icing: Add butter and maple syrup to a small pan over low heat. Whisk occasionally until the butter has melted. Turn off heat and whisk in the sifted powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Add a pinch of salt if needed. Drizzle over cooled cookies. The icing will set after about 1 hour.
  • Keep the cookies covered at room temperature and enjoy.
